Updating the Management Plan for Lake Estes, Mary’s Lake, East
Portal and Common Point
Introduction
Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD) and the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) have completed the development of the new Resource Management Plan (RMP) and associated Environmental Assessment (EA) for Lake Estes, Marys Lake, East Portal and Common Point. Because the parks are Federally-owned, any major actions at these sites had to be given a proper level of environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act. As a result, the document is a joint RMP and Environmental Assessment (EA). This RMP/EA will replace the 1996 RMP and EA, and will establish a 10-year plan detailing the management framework for the conservation, protection, development, and enhancement of the properties. The final document is now available on this website (see link below).
Contributors
EVRPD and Reclamation partnered to prepare the combined RMP and EA. Reclamation owns Lake Estes, Marys Lake, East Portal and Common Point as part of its Colorado-Big Thompson water diversion and storage project . EVRPD has been the recreation management partner at these four parks since 1954.
A project Work Group made up of collaborating agencies and organizations was created to assist in the development and evaluation of the plan. EDAW, a local planning and landscape architecture firm, was been hired to assist with the process and plan preparation. The public, park visitors, park neighbors, government agencies, and other organizations were invited to comment and contribute at meetings, interviews, or in writing throughout the process.
